Science advocacy group receives Biogen Idec Foundation grant for biotech teacher workshop
RALEIGH (Jan. 17, 2012) — The North Carolina Association for Biomedical Research (NCABR) is pleased to announce it has received a $15,000 grant from the Biogen Idec Foundation to present a workshop about biotechnology research for approximately 40 middle and high school science teachers.
It will be modeled after Rx for Science Literacy, NCABR's highly acclaimed series of free training workshops for North Carolina teachers and will feature presenters from North Carolina State University's Kenan Fellows program. Each participant will be guided through hands-on activities that easily can be duplicated in the classroom and will take home laboratory materials and supplies to help implement those activities.
The workshop will be held Oct. 23 and 24 as part of NCABR's revolutionary Bridging the Gap conference, in Raleigh. The conference is designed to strengthen science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education at the K–12 and college levels throughout North Carolina by bringing together education, industry and state government organizations to exchange ideas, increase communication and promote resource sharing. Conference registration will open in March.
NCABR is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization founded in 1989 by the leaders in North Carolina's bioscience research community. NCABR's members and supporters include academia, industry, government, nonprofit research organizations and professional societies.
